The J‑1 Program is a U.S. Department of State exchange visitor program that allows international students, graduates, and professionals to gain practical training, cultural experience, and professional development in the United States. It is designed to promote mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries through education, work, and cultural exchange.
The J‑1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa for participants in designated exchange visitor programs.
It was created under the Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961.
The program is administered by the U.S. Department of State, and participants must be sponsored by an authorized organization.
Sponsors issue the DS‑2019 form, which is required to apply for the visa.
There are 15 categories under the J‑1 program, including:
Interns – recent graduates gaining practical training in their field.
Trainees – professionals receiving training not available in their home country.
Students – enrolled in U.S. schools or universities.
Professors & Research Scholars – teaching or conducting research.
Au Pairs & Camp Counselors – cultural exchange roles with families or camps.

Pay required fees: SEVIS I‑901 fee ($220 for most categories) and visa application fee ($185). Some categories like au pairs or camp counselors have reduced fees.
Some participants may be subject to the two‑year home residency rule, requiring them to return to their home country before applying for certain U.S. visas.
Participants can stay for the length of 6 - 12 months of their program, plus a 30‑day grace period to prepare for departure.
